Smithfield Foods wholly owns six international operations, consisting of four subsidiaries in Poland and Romania and two food distribution operations in the United Kingdom and Romania.
Animex, one of the largest meat companies in Poland, processes pork, poultry, and beef. Agri Plus, our Polish hog production subsidiary, provides most of the hogs to Animex; independent farmers supply the balance. Animex purchases nearly all the poultry it processes from independent growers. Animex operates two poultry-growing farms, one egg-laying farm, and four hatcheries to supply chicks to independent poultry producers. Animex does not slaughter cattle. However, we do purchase fresh beef for further processing into packaged meats.
In Romania, Smithfield Prod operates the largest pork processing plant in the country and receives 100 percent of its supply from Smithfield Ferme, our Romanian hog production operation.
Our hog-raising operations in Poland and Romania raised approximately 2.4 million market hogs in fiscal 2013. Our food processors in those countries produced more than 865 million pounds of fresh pork and packaged meat products in the same period.
Our international operations1 follow the same systems for animal care, environmental management, and food safety as we do in the United States, and they have been implementing our corporate employee health and safety standards. We also developed sustainability goals and targets, like those of our domestic operations, for our international operations and began implementing them during fiscal 2013.
In this section, we report five years of data and other information about our wholly owned Polish and Romanian operations. Some highlights from our efforts in fiscal 2013 include the following:
- Improved overall water use efficiency by 21 percent since 2008;
- Donated more than 766,250 servings of meat and protein products to those in need;
- Provided 127 scholarships worth $90,000 to Polish students; and
- Planted more than 6,000 trees in 25 Romanian villages.
